If affording a new kitchen with granite worktops looks to be pushing your budget to its limit,
then the following tips may help you to achieve your dream without breaking-the-bank.
Firstly; it would be best to keep your worktops, so that a depth of 600mm or at maximum
610mm is able to be used throughout. Many UK suppliers import granite in these depths (600mm / 610mm),
30mm thick, as it is Today's standard and looks great!
Generally, these granite sections come in lengths of; 2500mm / 2800mm and often, have a
pre-polished leading edge, as it may be given free in some cases, so looking for deals on
your worktop, where you can get this, can help to lower the final cost.
The colour choice of your granite worktop is another important factor in cost.
As a guide; grey is by far the cheapest colour and absolute black, is often the most expensive
and mixed-dsh colours are probably somewhere in the middle.
OK! So you don't like grey?
In fact; if grey is set with the right colour scheme, then it can actually look fabulous! My
favourite grey granite has to be polished Spanish Silvestre grey, which also has a little
sparkle, so grey doesn't have to mean dull...
The Sink and Other Options
Under-mounted sinks with draining grooves are fabulous, but due to the extra manufacturing
costs, can increase the cost of your worktop and are far more expensive than a standard
over-mounted stainless steel sink with its own tap and drainers. Additionally, an under-mounted
sink also requires tap holes cut, so this is yet another addition to your bill.
With this in mind, if prestige is what you are looking for then given it's aesthetic design
qualities, the under-mounted sink is the only choice!
Up-stands and splash backs in matching granite also look great, but it is also another cost
addition, where tiles would be a much cheaper option and can also look superb.
Granite worktop installation
A worktop installation could easily cost £500 or more alone, using national companies.
Without up-stands, you should be able to get a smaller to medium sized kitchen's granite
worktop template and installation for around £350, from a more local company.
A word of caution however; there are some unreliable companies and poor suppliers operating
throughout this country - try and avoid these at all costs, get some price comparisons,
as extra cheap could be extra cheap rubbish!
